Do you think we should all have the right to defend ourselves and our properties against burgalars? This elderly gentleman did and the burgalar came out worse! He was an ex boxer and he gave his intruder a good hiding he won’t forget in a hurry. Fortunately the judge agreed and sent the bad guy to prison after telling him he got what he deserved.

Would you defend yourself and your property/family in this way? I certainly would. Why should someone think they have the right to break into my home and take things that don’t belong to them, and get away with it?

I would certainly defend myself, my family and my property. I feel that as soon as those people choose to come into your house they loose all human rights. They definitely do not deserve to be ‘protected’. I’ve heard of stories in South Africa where the man that defended his property got put in prison instead because he used ‘force’. But there its either you take the shot or they shoot you. I think its terrible.

this really gets my goat, when the law defends the human rights of a burgalar!!, he shouldnt be there in the 1st place, he has no rights when he forcefully enters someone else property.

Im all for defending your home and your family, i think if the rights were in our favour we would have less of this sort of crime!. In reality i dont know if id be too scared to confront whoever it is, but id like to think i would, id give him a good belting round the head with something!. The only worry is - is that the burgalar quite often comes armed too!

How refreshing to see a burglar punished for his crime and the victim being allowed to get on with their life with some dignity after the attack; not becoming branded a criminal too just for standing up for themselves. The thug got what he deserved and good riddance to him too; at least for 2 years.

I would defend my property and have been in a situation twice now where I have know an intruder to be in my house; it is a truly petrifying experience. The first time a few years ago and before OH and I lived together a guy broke in while I was sleeping over, I must have been about 18. I didn’t recognize him but later found out he was an old so called friend of my OH, he took a few things but not before I picked up a small table and aimed it at him which unfortunately missed, I dropped the fight when I realized he had a weapon.

There was me thinking I would be safe almost directly opposite a police station. This guy actually came thought the front too.

More recently while living in a student area, a gorgeous house but known drug dealers across the road and also a few houses down. About 6 months went by with me frequently witnessing violent brawls in the street I wanted to move but couldn’t due to the tenancy so I was just happy they left us alone. Until one day one decided to pick on us out of the blue, a guy barges in at 2am out of his head on drugs; he demanded food, tried to take games and a digi cam and demanded to make a phone call. We gave him food to take away but my OH wasn’t about to let him take his stuff, he became violet when we tried to force him back out but backed down enough to let him make the phone call. Lucky OH has kick boxing training and restrained him and at this point as I was pretty freaked, he was a big guy.

He left empty handed and to avoid friction we decided not to report the matter to the police. We may just as well have as the next day police officers came to take a statement after tracing the phone call. They treat us like criminal scum and warned us that he is wanted and if we ever let him into the house again we will face charges for harboring a criminal (or something along those lines). I knew exactly who he was, he was dating the dealer women across the road, but they didn’t believe we were not somehow involved in his other crimes.

He was arrested shortly and sent to prison, two weeks later we moved but that was the day I lost faith in my local police force.

So glad to be away from that area

That is shocking - luckily you guys were able to leave that area easily.

My cousin’s house in south africa was broken into just recently. Well...almost. She was asleep in the morning and she heard someone at the gate - she thought it was the made but remembered that she was on holiday. when she got up she saw that it was a coloured man trying to come into the front door. Luckily she was able to press the panic button (thats connected to the house alarm for armed and response to come) and she went to hide in the bathroom. It was horrible for her.

I think that is what worries me the most of my family in south africa - is their safety.

But so far I have been lucky enough not to have experienced any of this myself (touch wood). But quite a few people in my family have been faced with these situations.

Its so horrible - what on earth makes them think they can enter your personal living area. They should just get a job and support themselves. Especially gypsies around here in the UK - I see loads of ‘pikies’ around here in the UK just deciding to settle their trailers on a farmers field - and they’ll just pollute that area. And go scam loads of people and steel on the side! It is absolutely terrible - they have no morrals.

I was reading about the infamous Tony Martin, who shot a burgerlar who broke into his remote farmhouse. He says he has no regrets. Can you beleive it was 10 years ago now? Doesn’t seem that long.

I think you should have the right to defend your home and I think the law is outdated on the details of what you can and cant do.

Im lucky in so far Ive never been burgled but after Max (my old dog) died I woke up one night after hearing the front door click shut (we never use the front door) luckily my OH was home and also heard the noise , then we heard someone going through the cupboards we jumped out of bed and as we ran downstairs we shouted and swore like maniacs.. As we piled through the living room door the thief was fleeing empty handed via the back door.

We didn’t catch him but the very next day OH took me to the local dogs home and we adopted Oscar.

.
Another tip is this ,I hear so many people saying ‘oh dont mind old rover he wouldnt harm a fly. Duh remember Rover is there as a deterrant not a walking rug, theres no use in having a dog if you go round telling everyone it doesnt bite! I tell people that if my dogs think I or they are threatened then they will bite.

hell yeh, if i cold keep dogs (cant because of allergy) i would also like to think they would help defend me/house too!!.

As far as im concerned, a burgler shouldnt be in someones house, and if theyre caught - they get whats comming to them.
