Has anyone ever tried to plan one of these things, I am at the moment; give me strength!!!

It’s my little brothers birthday this month so mum has invited his full class of 4/5 years olds; then there are the relatives and the freinds children, plus the neighbors children too, bringing us to a grand total of 56 under 6’s all under 1 roof.

The way she is going at it anyone would think it’s his wedding, the theme is pirates & fairy’s and we have hired a function room for the day. 9 designated adult helpers will be on hand, all relatives (56 kids I think we are going to need them)and some of the older kids in the family too. Apparently we are all supposed to dress up as pirates - I don’t think so somehow; but some of my family are very keen on the idea.

The whole thing lasts 3 hours; there will be a disco, clown, and bouncy castle which thankfully has all been organized already but we still have to arrange the party bags, food, decorations, transport - the list is endless.... The little guy of course is over the moon to be having his very own party; and that makes it all worth while in the end.

Dose anyone have any tips? We are putting together a bag for emergency’s inc baby wipes plasters, bin liners and oddly enough a staple gun, any experience on anything else that may be useful is very welcome.

What type of children’s parties have you planned yourself, I have noticed a trend in going to a large indoor play complex with dedicated party rooms, they all get to have a good tumble about before hot dogs and birthday cake.

Some of his freinds have had parties at home too with just a few select freinds. I think this is the more risky option but probably the least expensive.

Wowza!! That is a LOT of kids! The most important thing is that you will have to make sure you are organised. Make a list of games (I can post a few for you later) and have back-up plans. Do remember that some children are scared of clowns. You will have to be prepared for that.

Is the clown going to be doing games? In Malaysia, if you get a clown they organise games and they do activities like balloon twisting (creating things from balloons).

Who’s baking the cake? Pity I’m not closer; I would have loved to help you. I just love creating!

There are a lot of sweets you can use as treasure, like gold-wrapped chocolate coins.

ToysRus is a great place to get theme party goody bags.

Wowza!! That is a LOT of kids!

Oh yes… gulp  LOL

Well there have been a few comments about children who might be scared of clowns so we have some backup games organized just in case. There was originally going to be a magician dressed as a pirate but we couldn’t book him for that day.

Here are a few cake ideas:

Thank you very much for the links I love the second one I wish I could have a go myself but my mum is decorating the cake now, it’s shape of a pirate ship similar to what they have done in the first link I will post a pic when it’s done.

My job is the table center piece its a big treasure chest I have saved a few gold coin sweets to go inside but now you mention it there are a fair few treasure like looking sweets available.

Have you baked cakes before lax and thank you for the offer I know what you mean I love to get creative too.

I was reading an article which said that most major supermarkets stock theme party goody bag toys too. It would be a good idea to check out Tesco to see what they have as well.

When my nephew was little, I used to bake all his birthday cakes. I made a volcano cake for him last year and got dry ice for the smoke. The hard work all paid off when I saw the joy in his eyes. smile

Here is a great link; it has games and food suggestions. Finger food is the way to go:

Are any adults coming? They can either eat what is available or if you prefer you could add a few adult type dishes.

And a couple more links for party ideas. The idea of turning the room into a pirate ship is just too cool!!

There are some great ideas out there for pirate parties some people have even won awards for there theme. Turning the room into a pirate ship really is ace.

The whole hawainan grass skirt and hula theme seems to be quite fashionable at the moment so we have tied in some of that with the general theme, mostly for the girls rally and I got most of them from tesco as it happens. i have been looking round the net at some party planning site too they seem far better for the theme.

For the adults my mum isnt planning to do anything she says with some conviction well it’s not for them is it. My aunts have other ideas and plan to bake quiches and mini sausage rolls just figer food really. One aunt wanted to bring her chocolate fountain but we drew the line there just to messy.

Your volcano cake sounds awesome, the dry ice idea is great did you have to keep it in a special container within the cake?

Well....this is a bit tricky. If parents are bringing their children to the party, what happens if they want to stay? When I was little I remember things were a bit different then; parents weren’t expected to come in. Nowadays they use the party as an opportunity to gather. Sign of the times perhaps.

I saw a great recipe for ‘toadstools’ which used small boiled eggs for the base, cherry tomatoes for the caps and feta cheese sprinkled on top. Very adult sounding but you might be able to adapt this for kids. I’ll give it some thought too. When is the party?

Re: the dry ice, the guy at the shop didn’t tell me it had to be stored at a temperature well below the usual; something like -100 would have worked! Most of it melted so I used some of it in a small container and some sparklers for the fire and smoke effect.
