I am about to re-enter education some 18years after leaving school. I am finding it daunting but also exciting smile
I have a teenager who is going to be doing his exams this year and is very “whatever” about them...he is a clever child but is education wasted on the young?? Are you in a better position in your more mature years to knuckle down and study?? To my son it all comes easy but to me its an exciting challenge! a new chapter in my life!

I should have returned to college after my GCSEs , but i wanted to work!,this led to one low paid job after the other, and quite frankly-rubbish jobs too. But i was stuck in that circle because i had to carry on working.

After one job making my so miserable at the beginning of the year, my husband decided i should jack it in, i returned to college (age 29) and yes- god it was so very daunting, and to be honest i felt thick!. but when i got there i realised i was with similar kind, various age ranges and capabilities and settled in fine. I had hyped myself up about nothing to be honest and all went well. it was just a basic course and i came to realise that its qualifications were still not enough for me to move on. SO im returning back in sept to start a 9 month medical secretatrial course, its going to be hard and quite full on, but im not half as nervous as i was the first time!! and hopefully its another step in the right direction!!.

So, i say go for it!!

I know exactly where you are coming from, sunshine. You just don’t appreciate your education when you’re younger. I remember sitting my A Levels in the UK - I failed one of them (history) but now the subject fascinates me and you can’t keep me away from documentaries and the like. I think if I studied and sat the exam today, I’d do very well - but back then, I just didn’t have the motivation for it and don’t think my mind was mature enough to handle the subject (if that makes sense).

I went to university at the age of 25. My mother didn’t go to university until she was in her thirties.

What kind of education are you going for, sunshine? College? University? What are you going to study? In any case, good luck - and enjoy!

I am going to train as a nurse specialising in hopefully childrens nursing, It’s a year at college and then 3years at Caladonian uni on a deferred place, fingers crossed!! Seeminly after so long out of education your results are nil and void. I had my induction day on Monday and it went ok, was pretty scary but I’m sure it was much the same for everyone else doing involved. Going back to education as a single mum is really scary cash wise but hopefully I will still be able to work at least 16hours over and above my course so I will still be able to afford “santa” smileI’m really lucky to be honest to be in this position that my oldest can baby sit his wee brother because even with the after school care its not enough. I dont have that much family to fall back on, so my oldest is now starting to help out, He keeps the wee one till my mum picks him up for school and till his dad picks him up on a Saturday while I work.
