As the quest for a beautiful body continues, women everywhere are working to look their best. When it comes to hair removal, the biggest question beauty experts hear over and over is ’Which hair removal option is the best?‘ Since different women have unique needs, it’s best to examine the more popular hair removal methods and their features as well as drawbacks.
Hair removal can be a tricky process for even the most savvy and inclined woman. Choosing a hair removal option can be as confusing as choosing your hair style or hair colour. When you’re choosing a way to remove unwanted hair, consider the following things:
- Do you want a temporary or permanent fix?
- How much time do you have to invest in the process?
- What is your beauty budget?
- What are the areas you’re concerned about most?
For many women, there won’t be a cut and dry hair removal option that works best. They will need to try a few to find one that suits their needs and their budget. Even still, some women opt for more than one treatment option in order to get the results they want.
Shaving the Hair Away
For some women, shaving works the best. It’s not a permanent fix since you’re only cutting the hair extremely close to the skin, so the hair will grow back in a matter of a few days. If you’re a woman that likes to keep the bikini line under control and neat, shaving is one of the least painful options available for hair removal and it’s among the least expensive, too. You can do it in your own home and aside from a good razor with a sharp blade, you only need shaving cream. While you can use your husband’s or partner’s shaving cream, it’s best to use one made for women as a woman’s skin can be more sensitive than a man’s.
Plucking Unwanted Hair
While using tweezers to pluck unwanted hair may not be the best option for removing unwanted hair from large areas like the legs or bikini line, it can be an effective way of removing hair from the eyebrows, upper lip and chin. Hair is only removed from the root so the hair will grow back in time. It’s very inexpensive as tweezers are the only tool required but it can be time consuming and a bit on the painful side, depending on your pain threshold. The process of tweezing hair isn’t difficult, but the hair does need to be long enough to grasp with the end of the tweezers.
Wax the Hair Away
Waxing unwanted hair has been around for centuries but has made significant improvements over the years. Waxing used to be considered messy as the wax, which used to be honey based, was extremely sticky and hard to remove from the skin. Today’s waxes are more water soluble and can even be sugar based, so clean up is easier. Some women report waxing as being painful but it’s very short lived. The wax is poured on and after it sets, it’s pulled off quickly with a specially made cloth strip. You can save some money and buy a home kit but for best results, it should be done in a salon or spa for a reasonable price. Waxing typically lasts longer than shaving or tweezing so you may not need to repeat the process for three weeks or longer. Waxing is a very popular way to remove hair from the eyebrows, chin, bikini line and upper lip.
Depilatory Creams
This option can be done in the comfort of your own home and is also reasonably priced for those who are watching their budget. The depilatory can be used on the legs, upper lip, chin, arms, and legs. It can be time consuming to apply the depilatory cream and then wait for the hair to dissolve before removing the cream but the results can be worth it. Hair is removed below the skin and can take a couple of weeks to grow back so as with shaving, this is not a permanent removal. If you choose a depilatory cream, it’s not recommended for your eyebrows or the bikini line. As with waxing, the hair needs to be a certain length in order for it to work properly.
Laser Removal and Electrolysis
While these two options are extremely effective, they are also the most expensive of the hair removal options outlined. Both require multiple treatments in order for the unwanted hair to be completely removed. If you’re considering laser treatment, consider that it may not completely stop hair from growing back but can significantly slow it down.
Electrolysis can be painful for some people and those who are prone to scarring may experience problems where the needle was inserted. However, if you’re looking for a permanent option to removing unwanted hair this is a lengthy but highly effective process.
Regardless of what option you choose for hair removal, keep in mind that if you have sensitive skin, waxing and depilatories can aggravate your skin. You should be aware of the risks involved with processes such as laser and electrolysis, too.

A great article!
Hint for shavers - If you have sensitive skin, rather than using shaving cream try using hair conditioner. It gives a nice smooth shave without the rash and burning brought about by many shaving creams. Especially good for those really sensitive areas.
