Five Great Hobbies to Involve the Whole Family

family hobbiesWith most of us living hectic lives with crazy schedules that keep us jumping all week long, relaxing and spending time with our families on the weekend is a welcome change. Sometimes, however, finding something to do that can get everyone involved at the same time might seem a bit challenging.

If you are bored with your normal weekend routine, with everyone going in their own separate direction, try finding an exciting hobby that everyone can do together. Though it may take some creativity on your part to discover an activity that everyone enjoys, the quality time spent together will be both rewarding and relaxing.

Though every family’s interests vary, you can almost always find a common thread that can blossom into an enjoyable hobby for everyone. Think about what your family enjoys the most, individually and see if there is anything with the potential to appeal to everyone. Ask for everyone’s opinions and respectfully request that everyone give some of the activities a try, even if they aren’t hooked at the idea. Trying new things together, in itself, can be a fun hobby for you and your family. Here are five great suggestions that might help you to get started down the road to creating wonderful memories with your family.

Cooking

To some, cooking may sound like a necessary chore of life, but it can actually be a fun, family activity. The popularity of gourmet eating has soared in recent years, with celebrity chefs such as Emeril Lagasse and Gordon Ramsay becoming heroes among men with some sets of people. If you and your family enjoy delicious food, why not try cooking together and creating fabulous menus and meals. You don’t have to do it every night of the week, but for some fun on a weekend afternoon, get everyone in the kitchen together and whip up something fabulous. Not only will it be fun for everyone, but also will inspire creativity and teach necessary life skills to your children.

Hiking/Biking

If your family is the type that enjoys the great outdoors and communing with nature, hiking or biking might be the perfect hobby to get everyone involved. Whether you stay close to home and explore your own neighbourhood or plan exciting excursions anywhere in the world, you will be sure to discover things you had never realised were there. Additionally, the outdoor exercise will help to increase your family’s overall health. The time spent exploring the world around you will give your family a chance to bond, talk, and discover things about each other, as well.

Photography/Scrapbooking

Preserving your memories is almost as much fun as making them. By turning photography and scrapbooking into a family hobby, you will be able to save a lifetime of memories and enjoy them time and again. Take turns taking pictures at events, outings, holidays, or just everyday candid shots. Then sit down as a group and organise the photos with fun layouts and embellishments, making your own personal family history book. Even the littlest will enjoy helping to cut paper for page decorations and picking their favourite photos to put on a page. As you relive the exciting times with your family, the shared memories will create an even closer bond.

Collecting

Though it may sound a bit stereotypical to consider collecting things as a hobby, it can be a lot of fun for everyone. The thrill of the hunt and researching the history and value of the items collected can be something that the whole family will enjoy. Stamps, coins, and sports cards are just a few popular collection ideas. Collecting and then reselling can be a fun hobby that can allow you to save for purchases, such as trips or event tickets. Whether you collect for fun or as a family investment, you are sure to find something that everyone can get involved in. Once you get involved in this hobby, you will find that suddenly everyone will develop the eye of a connoisseur.

Genealogy

Discovering the origins of your family can be very exciting and educational for everyone. Spending time together, researching your family’s roots can reveal some surprising things about your origins. Interviewing older family members will likely result in hearing some interesting anecdotes and deep family secrets that will open the doors to another world. Once you make your first discovery of an ancestor that no one knew about, everyone will be instantly hooked. You may even find that knocking down the proverbial brick wall becomes a task that consumes everyone’s spare time!
