Home Improvement Ideas to Keep Your Budget in Check

easy home improvementEven though the buzzwords of this decade seem to be about saving money, being frugal and minding our budget, that doesn’t mean you can afford to let home maintenance slide by the wayside. Keeping up on home improvements can seem like an impossible task and can become costly as well. Home owners are looking for inexpensive, yet easy home improvement projects that will not only improve the value of a home but also help keep repair costs to a minimum.

When you’re planning your home improvements, don’t underestimate the power of new paint or wallpaper. Your walls aren’t confined to yesterday’s wallpaper. Update your current look with some of the available textured wallpapers in stores. There are hundreds of designs available. In order to get the best out of your wallpaper, choose one wall to focus on rather than the whole room. Touch up high traffic rooms and hallways with a coat of paint or choose a new colour for a bold and different look.

If you’re itching to improve the state of your home and would like to make some minor improvements that will yield a big impact, read on for a list of things you can do this weekend that won’t hurt your budget but will make your home look good, inside and out.

Scrumptious Kitchen Changes

Most people spend more time in their kitchen than any other room in the house. Whether you’re cooking a meal or chatting with a friend over tea, the kitchen is the place most people gravitate to. It also receives more traffic than any other room in the house. You can update your kitchen’s look with a few minor changes such as changing your old cabinet and drawer handles for more modern ones. Use peel and stick tiles to update your backsplash, modernise your lighting with new fixtures or add dimmer switches for a bit of character and style. You can think outside traditional globe fixtures with hanging lights as well as mixing and matching fixtures for an eclectic look.

Squeaky Clean Bathroom Updates

Bathrooms have become highly underrated in terms of style and function. Yes, you use it to perform your daily duties and it keeps the family clean but there’s no reason why it shouldn’t be left out of your home improvements. New taps and fixtures are easy items to renovate and kits are fairly inexpensive as well. Once again, peel and stick tiles are the perfect way to change the look of the backsplash or bathtub. Pebble backsplashes are relatively new but provide a very modern look. Vanity lights and mirrors are also opportune places for a little sprucing. A new coat of paint as well as towel bars are not only inexpensive but classy upgrades you can do in one weekend.

Great Outdoor Fix Ups

Maybe it’s not your inside that needs an overhaul but your outdoors. Simple items such as new door knobs, lights, and even new house numbers can be a great addition. Adding some greenery can cause neighbours to stand up and take notice. Some home improvement stores will help you draw up a landscaping plan for free or a small fee. It’s well worth the cost to let them plan out your landscaping and then do the work yourself. You don’t need a lot of greenery to get great curb appeal though; small flowering bushes, perennial and annual flowers are colourful additions. To save some additional money on flowers, swap bulbs with a friend or purchase seed packets rather than starter plants.

The ways you can update and improve the look of your home are endless. Something as simple as adding new throw pillows or rugs to your sitting area or rearranging furniture can leave a big impression.

The important thing to remember is that while you might want to dive into fixing up your home, keep your budget and time at the forefront of any ideas you come up with. You may have the disposable income to add improvements but if you don’t have the time to put into those improvements, you may as well be throwing money away.
